SPRING AWAKENING is the musical that took the world by storm when it debuted at the Eugene O'Neil Theatre in 2006. Based on a controversial German play from 1891 of the same name, this musical tackles sensitive subjects like rape, child abuse, abortion, suicide, and homosexuality. While set in the past, the music is an alternative rock score. It also introduced us to performers like Lea Micele, Jonathan Groff, and John Gallagher Jr.Duncan Sheik is the Tony Award winning composer who brought this coming of age musical to life and in the process won three Tony awards, three Drama Desk Awards, and many more!The Cygnet Theatre offers a unique opportunity for An Evening with Duncan Sheik. He will be at the Cygnet for one night only on March 24th, at 7:30pm.Per the press release for the theatre this evening will be something that you don't want to miss!Director Sean Murray and Music Director Terry O'Donnell will be the hosts of An Evening with Duncan Sheik, which will include an on-stage intimate conversation with the composer about his creative process, his work and how musical theater resonates with him. Sheik's appearance is funded in part by a National Endowment for the Arts grant which also helps make this evening affordable and accessible to young theatre-goers.In addition to writing the music for eight-time Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, Grammy award nominated singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik has collaborated with Playwright Steven Sater on Umbrage, Nero, The Nightingale (La Jolla Playhouse) and Alice by Heart. Duncan's other works include Twelfth Night, Whisper House (Old Globe), Because of Winn Dixie, and American Psycho. His self-titled debut album, which was an enormous popular and critical success, introduced the hit singles "Barely Breathing" and "She Runs Away," and spent 30 weeks on the Billboard 200. Other albums include Humming, Daylight, Phantom Moon with lyrics by Steven Sater, White Limousine, Whisper House (concept album), and Covers 80's.
