Alyssa Joy Fox talks about FROZEN and playing Elsa on Broadway

Last week Broadway San Diego announced their amazing new season, but as a surprise they also had Alyssa Joy Fox who is the standby Elsa on Broadway to come and sing to end the event on a (literal) high note!  Before she rushed back to New York, where she is performing in the title role over multiple March dates, I chatted with her about FROZEN, and the upcoming national tour coming to San Diego.

Alyssa Joy Fox

Alyssa is no stranger to big belting roles or national tours, since she was everyone’s favorite green girl Elpheba on the national tour of WICKED prior to going to FROZEN on Broadway.  So what it is like stepping into Elsa’s icy shoes?

“It’s so fun; it’s really exciting to feel the energy of the crowd in front of me.  It’s exciting to be playing someone so iconic.”

It’s the messages of the show that Alyssa finds really exciting.

“It kind of breaks the prince and princess mold – and it’s less about the love story and more about the love of the people that you’ve made your family.”

There is plenty of Disney magic in the show as well, and though I tried to get the details of the magical costume change, Alyssa thinks the magical transformation in Elsa is incredibly empowering for audiences to see.

“Elsa becomes herself and really says ‘this is who I am,’ don’t be ashamed of who you are and own it.  They’re going to be loved for it; love over fear.  That’s the whole message.
